German-German border trail

German-German border trail

The Iron Curtain used to stretch out on more than 7000km, from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, dividing
Europe into two separate areas: the Eastern Bloc and the West part of the Iron Curtain. After 1989, the question
has been raised what to do with those thousands of kilometers of trenches, fences, bunkers and watchtowers. For
political and ethical reasons, many were those who wanted to make this painful past be erased. Some of them,
like Willy Brandt, wished to preserve a “piece of this horrible structure, as a testimony of a painful past”.

The Iron Curtain Trail (from North to South Germany) offers a combination between historical heritage and
cycling. The itinerary, stretching out on about 1400 km, is divided into 37 chapters-staging points. Starting point
and finish line are never far from a train station. In Germany, you will be allowed to travel with your bike in all
regional trains, as well as some national ones.

This guidebook encompasses: maps at a 1:75 000 scale, several city maps that you will pass by, as well as a
listing of accommodation facilities.

Ed. 2008, English version, a 200 paged guidebook.
