From Briançon via Turin and Siena Who would not dream by the sound of those names: Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena, Rome? One would imagine the beautiful landscapes and heritage treasures of this region. Starting in Briançon, passing by Turin and cycling through the Po Valley, through Tuscany before reaching the Eternal City, the Via Francigena is running on 38 stopping places and about 900 km. Pilgrims used to follow the Via Romea, which leads to Rome, in order to go to St Peter and Apostle Paul gravestones. The Via Francigena used to be the major pilgrimage road to Rome from the North (Cantebury to Rome). At the end of the 10th century Sigeric the Serious, the Archbishop of Canterbury, used the Via Francigena to and from Rome to be consecrated by the Pope; he recorded his route and his stops on the return journey The itinerary recorded in this guidebook is varied and enables you to discover a range of must-see places. Fully signposted, it follows minor roads or hiking trails. You will hike from North to South Tuscany and finally arrive in Rome, after a very moving hike. Ed. 2010, French version
