It was once the independent municipality of Belleville which was annexed by the City of Paris in 1859 and divided between two arrondissements along its main street, the Rue de Belleville. The neighborhood is situated on and around a hill. There are no longer mills nor vineyards but the atmosphere of this place – that Edith Piaf used to sing about and that the French director Truffaut filmed so perfectly – has been preserved and will still delight you.
