This guide accompanies walkers on one of the most significant routes of the Way of St. James in France. Linking Cluny, a major spiritual center of medieval Europe, to Le Puy-en-Velay, the iconic starting point of the Le Puy route, this itinerary is deeply rooted in the Cluniac and St. James heritage.
A structured and recognized historical route The Via Cluniacensis was established in 1999 by the Rhône-Alpes Association of Friends of St. James, with the support of local authorities, as part of a project to rediscover and promote ancient paths. From its inception, an initial guidebook was published to offer pilgrims a coherent, well-documented, and accessible route. In 2003, the route was enhanced by the opening of alternative sections, notably passing through Usson and along the Bolène road, reinforcing the continuity of the path and highlighting new areas.
This recognition was formalized in 2018 when the French Hiking Federation (FFRandonnée) integrated a large part of the route into the official network under the designation GR® 765, guaranteeing permanent signage and maintenance.
