With a diameter of around 70km, the Cantalien massif is one of the largest volcanoes in Europe. Peaks, mountains and planèzes have gradually taken the place of the enormous volcano of its origins. From the summit of the Cantal or the Puy Mary, you can see the full extent of this almost mountainous region, which has become an immense high-altitude pasture. Further east, perched on its basalt promontory, Saint-Flour, with its bishopric and cathedral, is a jealous reminder of its past prosperity. It is the gateway to the flattened peaks dotted with huge granite boulders of the Margeride, the Truyère gorges and the vast basalt plateau of the Planèze.
