The North Sea Cycle Route: The Fresh Air of Lower Saxony

Embark on a bracing journey between the Ems River (Dutch border) and the metropolis of Hamburg. This Bikeline guide reveals the hidden charms of the German coastline: a land of dikes, lighthouses, and authentic fishing ports.

A route between historic ports and unspoiled nature:

From the Ems to the Elbe: Cycle through seemingly endless polder landscapes and enjoy the tranquility of the dikes where only sheep set the pace of your journey.

  • Maritime Cities: Stop in the historic cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven, explore Hanseatic architecture, and discover world-class maritime museums.
  • The Wadden National Park: Cycle up close to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where land and sea merge with the tides.

Bikeline's expertise at your service for your trip:

  • GPS tracks included: Access GPX files. Essential digital guidance for navigating complex port areas and the winding Elbe River with complete peace of mind.
  • High-Precision Mapping: 160 pages with 1:50,000 scale maps, including information on wind, ferries, and cyclist-friendly accommodations.
  • Reliability and Updates: This 10th edition guarantees the most up-to-date routes on the EuroVelo 12 network.

You will find practical information on the circuit, as well as useful addresses on: www.northsea-cycle.com

From Nieuweschans (The Netherlands) to Hamburg, the circuit includes a total of 546 km of slopes (variants not included).

The journey is flat from Ostfriesland to Hamburg and you will cycle along the dikes. Only the portion between Cuxhaven and Hamburg has some coastline (you will pedal 50 m above sea level). You will ride on tarmac tracks or on unpaved country roads, often along dikes.

Warning: this bike guide only exists in German version, despite a complete mapping, do not hesitate to bring a small lexicon if you have no command of the language.
