Via Claudia Augusta - from the Danube to the Adriatic
|
From the Danube to the Adriatic via the Alps
The guide is in German but the precise cartography (1:75,000) and legend (in English) make it a very useful guide even if you have no knowledge of German. The proposed stages present the mileage and elevation gain.
Furthermore, the address book at the end of the guide can also be very practical.
The proposed routes cover nearly 800km of cycle route. Departing from Donauwörth, this guide takes you to either Venice (Veneto) or Ostiglia (province of Mantua in Lombardy).
Circuit characteristics:
History: In this guide you will learn a lot about the history of the Via Claudia Augusta, from its creation in the 47th century AD by Emperor Claudius for use for military purposes to its transformation into a cycle path and hiking trail of high cultural value today. Between the starting point in Donauworth and the arrival in Venice, the Via Claudia Augusta, depending on the variants chosen, is 729 to 788 km without excursions. The circuit to Ostiglia is 680 km long.
Quality of the paths: from the "family" circuit to the portions more accessible to mountain bikers, the difficulty and quality of the cycle paths between the Danube and the Adriatic is very different depending on the region and the land in which they pass. Along the Lech between Donauworth and the German-Austrian border on paved paths and tracks, in Nordheim or Königsbrunn on unterraced ground or even parts that are not very accessible or not developed, this guide describes the paths you will encounter: several sections are impassable or even difficult to access or have many steep slopes.
Please note: this guide only exists in German, captions in French can be downloaded here.
